The physical properties of materials often track their optical properties. Oriented molecular structure is visible as optical anisotropy, stress is visible in the photoelastic effect, composite structure is evident in optical heterogeneity, corrosion, fatigue, plastic deformation, brittle fracture, etc. are all clearly seen as morphological modifications of surfaces.
